As far as I know it's ungrammatical to use the verb form "seeing" when perception is involved - do you mean specifically the gerund seeing, or any use of to see? Either way, it sounds wrong to this US English speaker: we use "seeing" to mean "perceiving" all the time. 2a: We were still seeing each other a couple of times a month when her mother died I've put a question mark against #1a because I'm guessing many people would agree with me it doesn't work if the intended meaning is "at the time when".
